The Poet X is about Xiomara, a Dominican high schooler, who has questions and feelings about herself and those around her. However, they are not easy to explore in a family focused on religion, appearance, and who are set in their ways. Written in verse we get to be taken on a journey of a girl who's very presence is almost reason enough for her to repent.
I have nothing bad to say about this book. It made me tear up at the end. It is written beautifully, Acevedo's narration of the audiobook is perfect, and I think anyone can find a way to relate to the story in some aspect.
The family dynamics presented in this story made me reel at how relatable it felt. While my upbringing is different from Xia's, I have seen these dynamics. I also remember feeling the questions about life- the curiosity- burn in me as they do in her. She is such an important character to have in our recent "coming of age" stories.
