Leave This Book Behind
2 STAR BOOK
She just didn't understand... but isn't that.. the human condition? To only understand as much as there is 𝒊𝒏𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒎𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 to understand? And without that 𝒊𝒏𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒎𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 she could not- and would not know for months to come- what this book was or was not.
I'm going to make this brief, since I'm ready to stop thinking about this book.
This is about two families coming together during confusing times. A blackout incites paranoia, suspicions, and denial..
The synopsis I've provided is short not only to conceal any reveals, but because nothing happens. I gave this two stars, because every so often a little piece of the story would grab me enough to think "Oh, now somethings happening. " It didn't.
This author wrote in such a way that is obvious he is wholly impressed with himself. He uses the phrase "french fries..a burger.. grotesque number of little brochettes of fried chicken.."... It's Burger King nuggets. That is just one of the many overly indulgent descriptions.
This novel is supposed to be introspective, but just falls flat for me. Doesn't propose any "deep" questions to reflect on- despite all the societal themes it has potential to explore. It seems like it will be a "high brow" thriller. I am aware it will be made into a Netflix adaptation, and I will watch, but I hope the screenwriters take a few liberties.
