4.5/5 stars

Such an enjoyable memoir! Trevor has a really fun voice as he narrates the stories of his childhood, his family, and even the state of South Africa growing as he did.

I loved the history he would give as context to his story regarding apartheid and race relations- From not being able to walk on the same side of the street as his dad, the distinctions between white/coloured/black people, to his struggle with finding out what direction his life was going to go. It had me comparing it (obviously) to the race relations in America and how there are so many similarities, but scattered little nuances that sets them apart.

Also the relationship between Trevor and his mom is beautiful. It is slightly dysfunctional, but real. You can fee the level of love that they have for each other from their picking to their more tender moments.

I heard about this being in talks of movie rights, and even Lupita Nyongo playing his mother! This book is easy to see in cinematic form, and I am really excited to see where that development goes!
